It is refreshing to know there is some growth in OT services in Egypt.

Since the Jordanian Society for OT has the most OT prospects to work in the region, their society is a good source of job candidates. The Jordanian Society for OT has a Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Jordanian-Society-For-Occupational-Therapy-JSOT/195531410473047

You can always post on their page and/or they also have a group: http://www.facebook.com/groups/54402154998/

Palestinian OT Association also has a group: http://www.facebook.com/groups/group.paot/ Although, my understanding is that it is harder for them to get work visa's in Egypt. So, please anyone correct me if I am wrong about that.

Tombola at the ADVANCE & LRC 12th Annual Educational Conference Inclusive Education: "Ways and Means"

Once again, it is that time of year that the ADVANCE Society for Children with Special Needs and the Learning Resource Center (LRC) are organizing the annual educational conference in Cairo.

This year, the topic is Inclusive Education and the title of the conference is "Ways and Means." The conference will be held Friday-Saturday, May 4-5 at the Misr American College in New Maadi, Cairo.

I will be presenting on accommodations in the classroom for children with special needs. The schedule is still being finalized, so if you would like to be on the mailing list for further conference details, please contact Yasser at the LRC: lrcttc@yahoo.com

A few years ago, I organized a tombola with toys from various international companies: http://otegypt.blogspot.com/2010/02/purchase-raffle-tickets-to-raise-money.html

This year, I am organizing a tombola with mostly Egyptian and a few regional companies donating toys, books, dvd's/cd's, arts and crafts, baked goods (the infamous cupcake and cookie companies sprouting up the last year!), and services.  All proceeds from the tombola go to support student tuition scholarships at ADVANCE. There are a growing amount of children's activity centers developing in Cairo and several have been kind enough to donate certificates towards free classes!

Each tombola basket has a value of between 500- 1,000 egp.

Tickets will go on sale April 1 at the LRC and ADVANCE School in Maadi. The winning tickets will be selected on May 5th at the conference, but you do not have to be present to win.

I am still collecting basket donations from companies until Thursday, March 15th.  Companies can sponsor a whole basket or donate a few items that will be combined with other items to form a variety basket.

So far, I have collected the following donations with many more to come!:

  • ADAM BOOKSHOP: www.adambookshop.com (Basket of children's books in English and Arabic valued at over 700 egp)

  • KIDS MAKAN: www.kidsmakan.com (20 gift certificates for 2 free hours of activity time valued at 1800 egp)

  • DIWAN BOOKSTORE: www.diwanegypt.com (Basket of children's books in English valued at 500 egp)

  • COOKIES 'N MORE: www.cookiesnmorestore.com (2 gift certificates for a free cake and free giant chocolate chip cookie)

  • PLAY TO LEARN: www.facebook.com/PlayToLearnEgypt (8 educational workbooks/books and 4 sets of flashcards at a value of 500 egp)

  • KALILA & DIMNA: www.kalila-dimna.com (Children's Arabic story books valued at 300 egp + two 100 egp gift certificates redeemable for children's activities at the store)

  • Many more companies to still finalize their baskets, such as Crumbs, Cupcakes & More, ALEX toys, Adli Rizkallah Arts for Children, Art Cafe,  Junior Fit, NIGMA and MORE!

So, if you have a company that sells products relevant to children and/or educational services that would benefit a child's development and would like to participate contact me at lme1169@gmail.com.

It is a great way to raise money for children with special needs, as well as, spreading the word about local children's products and services!

When all basket donations are finalized next week, I will be posting pictures!

    Thanks,
    Laura
